Join us Friday June 8th for the opening reception of Barbara Bean’s new exhibition Speak Wilderness at the Robinhood Free Meetinghouse.

Speak Wilderness is a modern day tribute to the gifted, fearless female artist/scientists who explored, documented and left us with exquisite records of their encounters in the wild. Sibylla Merian (1647-1717) and Margaret Mee (1909-1988) shared a passion for the natural world and each alone went into the Amazon forests for years. The forests and their abundant waterways brought to both science and art knowledge about undiscovered species which added to the body of scientific evidence. Their paintings, drawings, and notes regarding plants, animals and insects were published and preserved and their stories have inspired generations grateful for their courage and talents.

Local artist Barbara Bean examines the works of women artist/scientists as well as those concerned with significant environmental issues. Her drawings and paintings have been created as a series and are for the first time being shown at the Robinhood Free Meetinghouse in Georgetown Maine. The work decries the long time desecration of the forests as well as the waterways, plant and insect life all of which have been plundered for profit. Bean’s response depicts a rebellion by Nature itself. Her subjects in the paintings increase in size. The reds glow as the plant territories expand and the seasons mix. Bean invents by giving us imagined material that stands against timidity, cowardliness and greed.

The exhibit will run from June 8th to Sunday, July 15 th . Check the Robinhood Free Meeting House website for hours.
